Sharp Announces Blu-ray disc with 100 GB of memory

It is the first medium that supports the BDXL standard with more than two layers. It has three layers and comes with matching recorders on the market. On 30 July’s sales launch in Japan.

Sharp on 30 July in Japan, a Blu-ray disc with 100 GB of storage capacity on the market. The the company announced in a press release.

The model VR-100BR1 will be the first medium in the world that the BDXL Standard (PDF) supports. It has three layers and is recordable (BD-R). To play new hardware is required to publish the same time as the Sharp Blu-ray Disc.

Pioneer Digital Design & Manufacturing, a joint venture (PDF) Pioneer (66 percent) and Sharp (34 percent), has developed the recorder. From 2011, all Sharp recorders support the new standard.

Production is not the Blu-ray from Sharp himself, but from an undisclosed company, as the technology blog TechOne reported.

To date, the standard capacity of Blu-rays 25 or 50 GB. In January, Panasonic and Sony had introduced a disc, which holds 66.8 gigabytes of data. The higher capacity is achieved by the so-called Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation (MLSE-i), which improves the quality of read and write operations.

TDK developed a Blu-ray Disc, which is more than ten layers and 320 GB of available memory. This capacity is being achieved only under laboratory conditions. The discs are, however – in contrast to Sharps BDXL disc – be compatible with standard Blu-ray recorders.
