What causes laptop batteries to overheat?

July 11th, 2010

In conjunction with the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Dell and Apple Computer announced large recalls of laptop batteries in the summer of 2006, followed by Toshiba and Lenovo. Sony manufactured all of the recalled batteries, and in October 2006, the company announced its own large-scale recall. Under the right circumstances, these batteries could overheat, potentially causing burns, an explosion or a fire.

To understand why that happened, it’s helpful to know a little bit about how batteries work. Laptop Batteries have a negatively charged terminal and a positively charged terminal. In a battery, energy from electrochemical reactions causes electrons (negatively charged particles) to collect at the battery’s negatively charged pole. Charged particles are attracted to opposite charge, so if you connect a battery to a circuit, the electrons will flow from the negative pole, through the circuit and to the battery’s positively charged pole. In other words, the battery generates a moving charge, or electricity. (See How Electricity Works and How Batteries Work for more details).

The exact reaction that generates the electrons varies, depending on the type of battery. In a lithium-ion battery, you’ll find pressurized containers that house a coil of metal and a flammable, lithium-containing liquid. The manufacturing process creates tiny pieces of metal that float in the liquid. Manufacturers can’t completely prevent these metal fragments, but good manufacturing techniques limit their size and number. The cells of a lithium-ion Pavilion DV6000 battery also contain separators that keep the anodes and cathodes, or positive and negative poles, from touching each other.

If the Acer Aspire One battery gets hot through use or recharging, the pieces of metal can move around, much like grains of rice in a pot of water. If a piece of metal gets too close to the separator, it can puncture the separator and cause a short circuit. There are a few possible scenarios for what can go wrong in the case of a short circuit:

If it creates a spark, the flammable liquid can ignite, causing a fire.

If it causes the temperature inside the battery to rise rapidly, the battery can explode due to the increased pressure.

If it causes the temperature to rise slowly, the battery can melt, and the liquid inside can leak out.

- There are several reasons why- multiple Dell laptop battery models have been recalled in the past few years. People want small, lightweight laptops that they can use for long periods. They also want their laptops to have bright screens and lots of processing power. For these reasons, laptop batteries have to be relatively small, but they also have to hold a lot of energy and last a long time.

Making lithium-ion laptop battery that can hold more power for a longer period requires vital components, including the separators, to be small and thin. The reduction in size makes it more likely that the VGP-BPS2 batteries can fail, break, leak or short circuit.

Check out the next page for more information-, including how to determine if the recall affects your laptop.

How to Replace PC CMOS Battery

June 14th, 2010

cmos_battery1

All desktop and laptop computers use a special battery called a Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) battery which stores information about your computer, such as the date and time, when the machine is powered off. Normally the Laptop battery re-charges itself whenever the computer is turned on but if it stops working or becomes damaged you will need to replace it manually.

Unplug the power cord from the power supply on the back of your computer. Remove all of the extra cables for the mouse, keyboard, monitor, printer and speakers.

Use a screwdriver to unscrew the case screws on the side of your computer and Dell Latitude D420 Battery . Put pressure on the side panel and slide it off the case

Locate the small circular Dell Inspiron 1720 Battery , which will usually be either color or silver-colored, near the center of the motherboard. Check the model number on the top of the battery and then purchase a replacement through an online electronics store or a local computer supply store. Make a note of the model information on the battery as you may need it to complete the installation.

Snap off the battery cover if your motherboard has one and then remove the CMOS Inspiron 1420 Battery by simply pulling it out of its holder.

Push the replacement Dell Latitude D830 Battery back into the battery slot and pop the cover back down. Put the side panel back on the case, re-attach all of the cables, and then power on your computer to ensure the battery was correctly installed. Wait to see if the computer changes to a prompt asking for the Latitude D810 Battery information or if it boots directly to the desktop.

Enter in the battery model information you wrote down earlier if the prompt asks for it and then hit “enter” to finish the installation.

The laptop battery capacity Explanation

June 10th, 2010

The battery capacity will be better with lower drain currents. To determine the laptop battery life, divide the capacity by the actual load current to get the hours of life. A circuit that draws 10 ma powered by a 9 volt rectangular battery will operate about 50 hours: 500 mAh /10 mA = 50 hours The cell voltage of alkaline cells steadily drops with usage from 1.54 volts to about 1 volt when discharged.

Laptop batteries are rated by, Voltage (V) and Milliamp-hours (mAh). Voltage is the rate at which energy is extracted from the battery and Milliamp-hours represents the capacity of the battery. The milliamp-hour rating corresponds to the runtime of the HP Pavilion dv4 Battery .

Batteries with different Milliamp-hours can be used in the same laptop provided the voltage is the same. The voltage must match the original HP Pavilion dv5 Battery or as recommended by the computer manual. Using a battery with a different voltage setting can seriously damage the laptop.

The power specifications of most compatible / replacement batteries are higher than the original battery manufacturers. This will not damage your laptop, in fact, simply means that in many cases these Dell Latitude D830 battery last longer than the original battery manufacturers. Ask the experts as
PowerUp on compatible replacement laptop batteries.

The runtime of a laptop battery will vary on individual notebook computers, based on the applications being used (ie high graphics, games), the number of times something is saved or retrieved from the hard drive and / or CD Rom, memory notebook, and chemistry and HP 510 battery capacity. A realistic average runtime of a battery is 1.5 to 3 hours. Using devices like a wireless adapter on the laptop also drains the battery considerably.

The life of a HP 530 battery under normal conditions is about 500 to 900 charge-discharge cycles. This is a year and a half to three years of battery life for the average user. As the rechargeable battery begins to fail, the duration of the battery begins to decrease.

How to Restore Batteries – Things to consider before buying

June 3rd, 2010

laptopbatteryfridge

If you are thinking about buying a refurbished laptop battery, here are some points to consider. Is likely to save a lot on the purchase price compared with the price of buying a new battery. And if you do not actually use your laptop with a hot, in fact, may be better for your wallet by way of acquiring refurbished.

Remember that most batteries have a brand new one-year warranty from date of sale. If you read the warranty closely, you will probably see that in the event something goes wrong with the Apple laptop battery, the manufacturer offered to replace the battery with a used or refurbished one, not a new one.

You would be wise to try to keep a spare battery for your notebook in hand at all times. When the Toshiba laptop battery inevitably go wrong, probably not surprised that the only way you’re going to get a replacement is asked to fit your exact equipment. With all makes and models of laptops out there, the computer and electronics stores simply can not afford to stock batteries for every laptop out there. Most stores stock few, if any laptop batteries at all.

If you are interested in saving money, consider buying a refurbished Sony laptop battery before handing over your money for a new one. This approach works well for some people. The main idea is to have that spare laptop battery on hand, because batteries can go wrong, without any warning sign.

6 tips to prolong Compaq Laptop Battery life

May 31st, 2010

The performance of your laptop notebook depends largely on the performance of your battery. And his time of life depends on its users-and that is you. These are the principles that guided the Compaq to reach the top so you can maximize the performance of the HP laptop battery.

To maximize Compaq laptop battery, as recommended by Compaq, suggestion:

1. Break in your new battery properly

New Pavilion DV5000 Batteries are still fully charged when sold. They have to be by bike or conditioned the first to get its optimum capacity. Loading and unloading of the battery up to 4 or 5 times is enough to determine it.

2. Preventing the memory effect

The memory effect can totally avoid fully charge and discharge HP Pavilion dv7 Battery twice a month.

3. Cleaning the battery always

Dirt on the HP Pavilion dv4 Battery contacts can decrease the performance of Compaq notebook battery. Cleaning with alcohol and cotton can make it look and work as good as new.

4. Exercise regularly battery

This is recommended for those using the AC adapter for longer period of time. We recommend using theCompaq Presario CQ70 battery at least once in two weeks apart. Batteries lose their charge when stored for a long time and you have to break in the battery when this happens.

5. The battery properly store

When not in use for a long time, the Compaq Presario CQ60 battery should be stored in a clean, dry and cool to be free from heat and other metals. A loss of the battery stores its load time and needs a break before reuse.

6. Optimization of portable power management features

The power management features of the Compaq Presario CQ50 battery allow the conservation of energy in the Compaq laptop battery. You can set lower speed processor or you can set the brightness of the LCD at its minimum level to ensure low power consumption.

From Chinavasion commented that allows a laptop battery can run for a whole day. It costs about 120 euros at current rates. However, that price might almost have brought some clamps that serve to recharge the car in case of trouble.

HOW-TO: reuse your old laptop battery

May 14th, 2010

Admit it. Come out of denial. You know that your laptop was super cool two years ago now gets 15 minutes of laptop battery. It sucks and we all share the same problem over time. laptop batteries (and many others begin), lose their total charging capacity after awhile. It’s slow, so I usually do not realize until years later. But when it does, you can not stop crazy. Laptop batteries usually cost a fortune (the battery in my PowerBook 12 “is like $ 130). For this reason, you should take the road less traveled and build your battery.

So what have you done? Well, not too complicated, only replace basically individual cells inside the battery box Sony VGP-BPS13. Any time a car radio, and has had this set of $ 20 at Radio Shack to buy? Well, if you look closely, it is usually only 6 batteries wrapped Saran, along with a proprietary connector. The same goes for these laptop batteries.

Now go, before I would like to issue a warning. While most of us think they are invincible we are not. This is something to be hurt if he could not jump around. If you have to cut the electronics and also what not, no. Does it help to a specialist. We are not responsible for anything that may happen, mkay? Kay. He in VGP-BPS10A / B, VGP-BPS10 / S can be exploited in the course.

Okay can therefore ready to operate. Take the fork from the wall for a moment and check.

build

Take your Sony VGP-BPS13A / B laptop battery. Try draining all the way, if possible. Check the label on your battery. Somewhere near the warning that says “Do not do this, do not that’blah, blah, blah” You should see a model number for the battery. It is likely that something along the lines of “Lithium Ion Battery Pack n levers” of the battery cover as such.

build1

If you have a PowerBook as I would like the following:

PowerBook battery

So. Now we have a bunch of cells. Cute. Here you find the part number for them. As you can see in the image of the PowerBook G4 battery, the number is printed on the packaging. In this case CGP345010. OK great. What does it mean? Google and see. Ahhh! It is manufactured by Panasonic. Wonderful. Now we have to get a replacement. If there are six cells, then obviously you need 6 new ones. Try this site for ordering them.

Get your Xacto knife, wire cutters, etc for this. You have to carefully remove all cells. Each bank is different, so I can not say how it will work for you. Just be careful not to throw the old ones.

Remove all metal contacts, etc, until you empty a Sony VGP-BPS13/S has a battery compartment.

Chances are your cells with the wires to come here to connect to something. No, we do not want this. We need them to put in the drawer! Remove the black and red, but keep all the other left. Generally, in order to prevent short circuits. Next, take the layer around your old batteries and move smoothly in the new. Once finished, you should look naked rechargeable laptop batteries, new and old.

Next you will need to bring the contact. Obviously with the metal. You can weld together properly with a metal strip on the front, or use the correct position of the metal inside the box with the battery cells from Sony VGP-BPS10. I have the second method and it worked for me after some tinkering around.

Almost there. Put everything back together as it was, and be sure to check the finished product with a multimeter to make sure there is a current. If all goes well, pull everything back together and then the laptop. Download the Sony VGP-BPS10/B battery completely unused and ready. You are my friend, are established.

Lan and Wlan(A) : Network setup and optimize

We tell you how to set up the perfect network. Easy access from multiple PCs to the Internet, you share a printer and share files – via cable, via radio or via the mains.

The PC is a sociable guy. More and more households and small businesses have two or three computers that have the same broadband Internet connection or printer to share. This article of our sister publication PCtipp explained to you step by step what you need for a small network, and how to connect multiple computers and laptops works best. In addition, we address common problems, special cases and tuning options.

Optimal network

This section is about the components of a network and their configuration. Once you know which device meets the task, set up your network in one’s sleep.

The computer

Current desktop computers and notebooks always have a network connection. A look in the Windows Device Manager provides information about the condition of the driver. In Windows XP, you go right click on My Computer on the properties. Change to the Hardware tab and click the Device Manager button.

114

In Windows Vista, open the Start menu, right-click Computer, and then also go to the properties. In the left pane of the window you will find a direct link to Device Manager. Fold under the two systems over the plus sign to the branch network adapter. In notebooks you see at this point usually several components in our example, an IEEE 1394 network adapter (FireWire), a wireless adapter for WLAN (wireless network) and the desired network connection, often seen also in terms such as LAN, NIC or Ethernet
