9 Ways for Windows 7 saving Battery Life

November 13th, 2009

Microsoft recently released a new 14-page whitepaper entitled “Windows 7 Power Management” to outline the power management technologies in Windows 7 that reduce power consumption. For those curious as to how exactly Windows 7 will use less power, this is your answer. For those who just want the quick scoop, here are 8 different ways how Windows 7 mainly save your Apple A1057 Apple A1148 battery life:

poweroptions

1) Idle Resource Utilization

This is one of the most important power management technologies because idle time is a significant portion of the time a computer is turned on. Idle efficiency in Windows 7 is improved by reducing resource utilization and enabling hardware to go into lower power states during long periods of battery A1008 Apple A1045 Apple A1061 inactivity. This includes the processor, disk, memory, and network activity on the computer. To demonstrate just how much power can be saved, CPUs consume nearly 0 watts when idle, but up to 35 watts at full power.

2) Trigger Start Services

Services were usually started automatically right after startup and would run in the background waiting for an event to occur. In Windows 7, certain services are only started when triggered by an event such as device insertion or an IP change. This makes it unnecessary to have services starting all the time and reduces the amount of background processes, then reducing your Dell D5318 battery.

3) Enhanced Processor Power Management

Windows 7 will include device driver support for the latest PPM technologies for Dell 75uyf Dell C1295. PPM allows Windows 7 to choose the appropriate processor performance state depending on the load and scale performance accordingly.

4) Adaptive Display Brightness

Microsoft says that the average display is set to turn off after 10-15 minutes of inactivity in Dell Latitude D620 Battery. Often times however, there are shorter periods of inactivity in between. To save additional power, ADB defines will allow dimming the display. ADB can also utilize hardware sensor technology to adjust display brightness accordingly to ambient light.

5) Low-Power Audio

Windows 7 will support the latest Intel HD Audio low-power specification, which introduces a new power state known as D3Cold to Dell Latitude D820 Battery. This is the lowest unresponsive power state that a codec can go into. It can also further conserve power when an audio device is not in use. Windows 7 also supports selective suspend technology that extends to USB audio-class devices such as microphones and web-cams.

6) Timer Coalescing

Modern processors reduce power consumption by taking advantage of idle time between executing instructions, but many PPM technologies require a minimum amount of idle time before obtaining any net-power savings. Timer Coalescing increases the average idle period by letting the Windows kernel combine periodic software activity.

Into the white-hot demand for wireless chipsets(B)

Expected, Microsoft’s Zune music player, portable media players in the field of the first application of Wi-Fi capabilities for aspire 3000 battery, portable media player markets, including portable digital audio players. End of this year is expected to portable media player sales will reach 190 million units last year, sales of portable media players and 1.7 million units. In-Stat noted that Microsoft’s portable media player market share will not occupy too much, the market is occupied mainly by Apple is expected to Microsoft, in its media player with Wi-Fi capabilities of the initiative will encourage other portable media players manufacturers in its products to configure Wi-Fi capabilities. For example, Apple a1175 plans to launch later this year to support Wi-Fi enabled iPod. However, In-Stat estimates that in 2007, more than 5% of the portable media players will have Wi-Fi capabilities.

In-Stat, said the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth integrated into a single chip may also be of great help to promote Wi-Fi in mobile phone applications. The analyst firm noted that the chip maker Marvell, Broadcom and Texas Instruments have announced a single-chip Wi-F / Bluetooth chipset, while the Texas Instruments and NXP two Bluetooth mobile phone chip market leaders have introduced a single-chip Wi-Fi and inspiron e1405 battery and single-chip Bluetooth device package. In-Stat says shipments of dual-mode Wi-Fi/cellular phones are expected in 2007 will reach 27 million, six million last year, integrated Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chipsets will help to promote Wi-Fi in the mobile phone applications.

Although based on the draft 802.11n standard Wi-Fi home wireless access equipment only in 2006 as a whole Wi-Fi routers for VGP-BPS8, gateways and home access device shipments in a little more than 2 percent, but, In-Stat expects This year, the percentage will increase to 15%. The analyst firm believes that this was mainly due to less than 100 dollars this year, the draft 802.11n wireless router will be more widely used, and chipset manufacturers to launch a small volume of 802.11n chipsets, will further promote its application. However, other analysts are being asked consumers not to use the draft 802.11n products, in order to avoid wireless standards as early as 2008, need to finalize the hardware vgp-bps2 upgrade.

How to buy a laptop battery

November 12th, 2009

When purchasing a Toshiba laptop Battery for your notebook computer, the first thing a consumer should look for is the reputability of the product at mind. If the product is made by the manufacturer of your laptop (i.e. Sony, Compaq, Dell, etc), you can usually be sure it is a quality product. However, many manufactures do not actually manufacturer, instead they are the brander of the product. For example, if you open up a genuine Sony laptop battery, you may find that the power cells inside are actually made by Toshiba, Panasonic, or a similar big name company. Sony in this case has just made the plastic case of the battery. This goes to show that the brand of the battery you are buying does not necessarily mean that the quality is superior. Many third party brands use the exact same power cells as original manufacturers. Using a third party manufacturer is often a good way to go when buying a Dell Latitude D620 Battery, as there are usually many extra benefits. For instance, most third party batteries are much lower in price than original manufacturers’ batteries. Secondly, they usually offer a superior warranty, as they realize that in order to win the consumer’s confidence; they must stand behind their product. A one year warranty is a must. Don’t buy any battery with a warranty less than one year. Batteries have been known to die early, and a three month warranty could leave you high and dry.

The next main thing a consumer should look for is the type of battery as Dell KD476 Dell U4873. Batteries can be made using several chemicals. For laptops, there are four main types. They are Ni-Cad, Ni-MH, Li-Ion, and Li-Poly. There is no major manufacturer that still makes Ni-Cad laptop batteries, as they are a very old and primitive type of power. Ni-MH is newer and more advanced, but is not as good as its Li-Ion and Li-Poly counterparts. If we compare the last three types (Ni-MH, Li-Ion, Li-Poly), we find that Ni-MH Dell Latitude D800 Battery Dell Latitude D830 Battery  weigh more than the other two, but produce less current than the other two. Li-Ion and Li-Poly are the most advanced types of batteries on the market, and you should try to get one of these two types if possible. Most laptops that come with one type of battery can not use any other type of battery, meaning that if your laptop came with a Ni-Cad, it must be replaced by another Ni-Cad. The same goes for the other types. Please note that in some cases, this does not apply. Some laptops that come with a Ni-MH battery can be replaced with a stronger Li-Ion one.

Lastly you must look at the power rating of the item you’re buying. As technology advances, so do power ratings. The battery you bought last year may be twice as strong this year, and might even be the same physical size. Batteries have two main ratings on them: Volts and Amperes. Because laptop batteries do not carry a very large amount of power when compared to larger batteries such as car Dell xps m1730 battery Latitude X300 Battery, most companies show their ratings with Volts and Milliamperes. One thousand Milliamperes equals 1 Ampere. When buying a battery, always go for the battery with the most Milliamperes (or mAh). Batteries are also rated by Watt-Hours, perhaps the simplest rating of all. This is found by multiplying the Volts and the Amperes together. We will now show you an example of finding the Watt-Hours for our example battery.

Our example battery is 14.4 Volts, 3600mAh
(remember that 3600mAh is equal to 3.6 Amperes).

14.4 x 3.6 = 51.84

This Dell Inspiron E1505 Battery Dell Inspiron E1705 Battery has 51.84 Watt-Hours. The term Watt Hour signifies the energy needed to power one watt for one hour. Thus this battery can power 51.84 watts for one hour. Suppose your laptop runs at 25.92 watts (this may be unlikely, but let’s use this just for simplicity). This battery could power your laptop for 2 hours. People usually associate the word ‘Watts’ with light bulbs, and yes, this battery could power a 40 watt light bulb for about an hour and 18 minutes, a 60 watt light bulb for about 52 minutes, or a 100 watt light bulb for 31 minutes; it’s the same idea.

The reason we have shown you watt-hours is because oftentimes the volts and Amperes vary. For example our laptop that uses a Li-Ion 14.4 Volt, 3600mAh Dell Latitude D610 Battery may use a NI-MH battery that is 9.6 Volts, 4000mAh. Now let’s do the math and find out which battery is stronger.

Li-Ion: 14.4 Volts x 3.6 Amperes = 51.84 Watt Hours
Ni-MH: 9.6 Volts x 4 Amperes = 38.4 Watt Hours
The Li-Ion is stronger.

Should I get a used battery?

This is a very valid question that every bargain shopper will encounter. Your first option is to purchase a new battery that naturally has new power cells inside. Performance will be at 100%, and it usually comes with a 1 year warranty. However, many companies will either skip that first option by offering only a used or refurbished battery, or they will give you both options: the choice of a new or a used/refurbished. Be skeptical when you see used/refurbished. Usually the warranty on this type of battery is very minimal. Now if you do not use your Dell Inspiron 1520 Battery very much, then this may be a great alternative vs. purchasing a new battery in upwards of $100. Refurbished batteries do not hold as much power when compared to new batteries. Also, they can kick the bucket on you randomly since you really do not know how old the battery is. Our recommendation is to stick with a new battery, or be very careful who you buy your refurbished battery from.

G1 Assault on battery

November 6th, 2009

I know I’m late to the party but a few days ago I received a small package containing a T-Mobile G1 phone running Android with a1175 A1185. The first thing I did was go to unlock-now to get myself a SIM unlock code. After submitting my details and paying up the 17.50 EUR it was just a case of waiting for the email, about 3 hours in my case. The email details everything you need to know when unlocking, particularly useful is the info on setting up a new APN which you’ll need to do if you aren’t using T-Mobile as your carrier. My O2 PAYG SIM from my iPhone worked fine and soon the G1 was syncing happily with gmail. One of the things that struck me about the G1 was all the negative comment on it’s size and feel that I’d read in various blogs and reviews of iBook G4 14 Battery. Personally I couldn’t see and issue with either the thickness of the device or the the look and feel of it and I wasn’t alone in that. I really don’t see what all the ‘complaints’ were about.

One of the things I had heard though, that I can confirm, is the poor battery life. Without installing any extra software the only real control over the G1’s power management seems limited to turning off the GPS or WiFi for pa3450u 1brs Apple a1008. However, there is a ray of light. After installing Power Manager things improved immensely but it still wasn’t enough. The solution I settled on was to buy an extended, 2400mAh, battery which came with a replacement back. The battery is physically 2 or 3 times the thickness of the original, which is why you get a replacement and the end result is a device that’s about as thick as a NOKIA N95.

So why didn’t I wait for a G2? Simple really. The G1 has a wonderful physical keyboard and Toshiba pa3384u 1brs Toshiba pa3107u 1brs battery. I really can’t stand on screen keyboards, perhaps I’m a minority.

Of course the other reason that I wont be getting a G2 is that Vodafone are capping both daily and monthly usage when you sign up – 15mb / day and 500mb a month. Perhaps everyone at Vodafone still uses a 6310? Maybe they just don’t like the G2 or Android. Who knows about Toshiba PA3591U-1BRS, Toshiba PA3465U-1BRS?

Update (Sunday 10th May) : G1 Running cupcake has been running for 3 days with the extended battery and no charging!

Battery Extender review

November 6th, 2009

Battery Extender is a power management app that aims to squeeze as much power from your phone’s battery (Toshiba PA3176U-1BRS) as possible by tuning or turning off some of the phone’s features that would otherwise be draining your precious juice. We’ve been testing it out on our Nokia N97, so find out whether we managed to do more on the move with our Battery Extender review…

Battery Extender allow you can use one of four preset battery profiles – Max Dell KD476 Battery, Outdoor Sports, Improved Battery and Original Settings or switch to a custom profile of your own devising. All the presets can be tweaked too, should you have any unusual requirements.

The first thing to note is that reading the application’s Help page is pretty much impossible when you are on the full-blown ‘Max Battery’ setting. No sooner have your eyes focused on the text than Toshiba PA3399U-2BRS Battery Extender shuts down that wasteful LCD display. Still, at least we know it is working.

Looking into each profile to see what it turns off is quite illuminating (or not, in the case of the backlight). Everything from Bluetooth to the screen auto-rotate will use an amount of power and Sony PCGA-BPNX Battery Extender will let whether these functions are allowed to run, and for how long. The level of tweakery is quite impressive – you can opt to have certain features be active only when you have more than a few pips worth of power, or for the backlight to dim when the battery starts running on empty.

About those presets – Max Latitude D620 battery is the full-on hardcore power saving option. As many things are turned off as possible, the backlight is dim as a Sunday Sport subscriber and turns itself off almost before it is on. Improved Battery is rather more sane and only really turns on the thumbscrews when you get down to a pip or two. Outdoor Sports is set to maximise power while still leaving the GPS turned up to the max so you can run apps like Sports Tracker. Original Settings is the ‘return to default’ profile and cannot be edited.

Although the presets are well thought out as far as they go, it would have been nice to have a few more – how about a ‘weekend away’ profile or one optimised for ebook reading? True, they can be customised but you can’t save your changes as a new profile and create new use cases.

We noticed a definite improvement in our battery life when using the Improved Sony PCGA-BP2NX battery profile – hitting a single pip is usually a sign that we need to charge ASAP but we were able to stretch out the standby time much longer than usual. Max Battery is probably best left to emergencies when you will be away from power for long periods and have to squeeze out every second. If we ever take up cross-country running, we’ll let you know how the GPS thing works out.

In conclusion, Battery Extender for Apple A1008 does what it says it will do. A few more options and the ability to save profiles would make this a must buy, but as it stands the app is definitely worth a look.

Save battery life, time, the world! Use a script blocker.

November 3rd, 2009

Admittedly, its not difficult to imagine a scenario where less CPU cycles result in less power drain and this method isn’t going to magically extend your BTP-43D1 battery life by much but its nice to see the theory tested to the extreme.

SecTheory.com took a notebook PC, a couple of browsers and measured the HP laptop Battery drain on the Top 100 Alexa sites. They then took the worst offenders, that is, the ones that took the most power drain, and blocked script and ads using NoScript and AdBlock Plus. The results were quite significant. On a Dell Inspiron B130 notebook, with a 1.5GHz Celeron M processor and 1 Gig of ram Inspiron E1505 Battery,, running fully patched Windows XP SP2, the power consumption when browsing the worst offending sites dropped by 11W, a 20% reduction. If its a 25W TDP CPU we’re talking about here, I can believe the results because browsing website has grown to be a very CPU intensive task.

The effect would be much less on netbooks and UMPCs but I would expect the same test to save 1W average which is about 10% – about 15 minutes for a device with a standard Dell Inspiron 6000 Battery. Of course, its not really normal to be picking the worst offending sites and continuously hitting them either. Under normal browsing use, you probably wouldn’t notice any difference but there’s something else you need to be aware of.

Script not only takes CPU and battery life, it takes time. Time to execute, render and in some cases, time to fetch the remote code. By disabling script you significantly improve browsing speeds on low power devices and by definition, you save battery (PB992A, PB993A HP PB994A, PB995A) life. I tried it a few weeks ago with the noscript plugin and I’ve seen many comments on UMPCPortal from users that also use the technique. It really works! You lock yourself out of application sites like Google reader initially but it doesn’t take any effort to enable exceptions for these sites as you go along. No more hung page loads waiting for remote sites to time out. No more of those terribly annoying auto-start video ads that make browsing on a low-end PC  Pavilion DV1000 Battery a misery. There’s even an improvement in security. Its a win-win-win!

Try it. Install the noscript plugin and see how you get on. Yes, I risk killing all of my advertising income if everyone does this on all their devices and I’m sure there are bloggers out there that will read this and cringe but I trust you’ll only use it on your netbooks HSTNN-LB31 and umpcs and put the exception in for your favorite sites! Long live the choice between simple html and web2.0!

Use different stand to cooling the laptop

If your latop’s cooling system is working properly, you can still do more. Strange fact is that when you use a laptop with a laptop battery on your laptop, you always ask for laptop overheating. Any soft objects may be blocking the cooling system of the ventilation holes. It also can cause heat to get caught underneath the unit. That is why people would burn their laptop.

However, heat buildup can even happen when the laptop sits directly on a desk using a laptop battery.

There are different ways to avoid this buildup. A latop stand to keep the bottom of the notebook and your use of the surface of the table some distance intervals in Apple A105 and Apple A1079,. It created the basic space, the heat can disappear. A type of stand are usually flat, legs are short, thin surface of the type, you can lay in your lap or desk. With an air-inch notebook PC 2, the heat can easily escape, and the airflow through the vents have been completely open.

Sometimes, a stand may be caused by an act of special materials such as aluminum heat in Inspiron 1100 Battery,. This device will actively utilize heat out of notebook cooling further assistance. Another approach is to a laptop pad or pad. In this approach, we hope that with the aluminum heat sink, you put the device active thermal management surfaces. This could mean that trap heat insulation pad notebook coming out to protect your lap. It could also mean that, on the positive development of built-in cooling fan out of thick pad.

Although you can from any electronics store or retailer to buy dozens of these cool online tools for your Inspiron E1505 Battery, one of the things you might at home, and now you can use. A small strip camping tables can be used as a stand notebook. Therefore, we can use large baking rack (can be used for cooling cookies) to do a stand.

One thing to remember is that the heat characteristics of your laptop are always changing, depending on age, environment and
power usage. So even if you get yourself the perfect cooling setup, you might want to install some sort of heat-monitoring
software in PA3450U-1BRS, PA3451U-1BRS. It’ll help you be more aware of your laptop’s fluctuating temperatures and learn how different situations can increase the heat.
